Whiskey Well
02:46
|
|
||
Under the yellow sun
On the yellow sand
My burnin' yellow back
Don't stand a chance
On some island far away from me
She's soakin' up sun on the beach
But in this heat all I can do is dream
Of a pre-primed whiskey well
Free-flowin' whiskey well
Nothin' but the finest whiskey well
Imported from the glorious gates of hell
Came on a diamond back
Gave me her poison bite
Lay down on my yellow back
And Lucy is in the sky
Oh so stupid me to even think
I could escape without a sting
Oh Lucy you and I are gonna sing
Of that pre-primed whiskey well
Free-flowin' whiskey well
Nothin' but the finest whiskey well
Imported from the glorious gates of hell
Came on a tunnel black
Save for one bright white light
Looked like that yellow sun
So I chose eternal night
Oh so stupid me I didn't think
How much the devil loves his heat
But now at least I finally can drink
From that pre-primed whiskey well
Free-flowin' whiskey well
Nothin' but the finest whiskey well
Imported from the glorious gates of hell

Fly Home
02:33
|
|
||
Fly, fly, I'm gonna be gone, gone upwind gonna be gone, northbound now summer passed on. Fly I'm gonna be gone.
Don't you worry, pretty little girl, I'm back before too long.
Them miles can't keep your love from me only make it strong.
California sunny days and musky Georgia evenings.
I must resort to better ways then dwelling on you leaving.
Fly, fly, your gonna be gone, gone downwind gonna be gone, southbound now summer passed on. Fly your gonna be gone.
Down the valley, Robert's claim, like grapes a love did grow.
Them summer's, ya they came and went, two years apart from home.
Well, colder months accustomed me to just a voice or picture.
Just one more year stands between, then I'll be finally with her.
Fly, fly, we're gonna be home, home darlin' gonna be home, homeward bound where we belong. Fly we're gonna be home

Good Chains
02:32
|
|
||
Lord these chains,
Wrapped around me,
Gonna drag me down.
Gonna drag me down.
O they clang!
Shake and ring.
They make a mighty sound.
O let me free!
Let me free!
Twist that lock and that silver key.
Break these chains from me,
O Lord, let me free.
Made of iron.
Made of steel.
Strong as sin, they're strong as sin.
They hold tight, and I feel,
Where that metal's been.
[Chorus]

Mirrorwater River
04:30
|
|
||
In my eyes you're the child
8 or 9, in your sundress by the river
Where we met, in my jeans I'm soakin wet,
Said you'd never crossed the river
And I should have left you dry
But we swam to the far side.
But now your tongue has learned the taste of good-bye
Like a daughter foolin herself into drinking wine
And to me it seems you're drunker every night
But it could be me, I never could take falling behind.
Back to school, don't forget me here at home
I write letters from the river.
Next to you my days are empty, so I write in poetry
Still I'm too shy to ever put 'em into song
You're the singer after all
But your ear prefers the sound of good-bye
Like a 5-star spoiled critic on a 4-star Friday night
And your voice was once my favorite place to dine
But you said good-bye and since then I've been starving inside
Oh mirrorwater ripple as I'm goin' in
I think I'm gonna swim...

Jefferson's Barn
03:46
|
|
||
Morning came through the Jefferson's barn to lift my head from the hay, still blood on my hands, stains on my arms, the love I'd thrown away
Once had me a dove for wife, mother of my only child.
A woman so sweet, a love so ripe, land for a quarter mile.
Well, spring had gone and the crops won't grow but enough to keep the family fed.
Well we just got word from back in town of the stones in the rivers out west.
So I headed out in 49 toward that setting sun.
The devil found me and I found no gold and it seems that the west had won.
I headed home to see my kin, all i carried was my shame.
What got me home was the love I'd missed, the love I'd thrown away.
When I got home my wife was dead, wrapped in her arms my son.
Two bullets sent through both their heads and a note from Jefferson.
it read
No crops have grown and a years gone by and stealing was your son, caught him in the barn with my Mabel Lee. Now his time in hell's begun.
Morning came through the Jefferson's barn to lift my head from the hay, still blood on my hands, stains on my arms, the love I'd thrown away

Shady Lady
01:33
|
|
||
On the corner, pretty lady.
In the back room she's pretty shady.
She's low. So low.
So far down ain't got nowhere to go.
He came over, crossed the tracks.
Now he wants his money back.
He's low. So low.
So far down ain't got nowhere to go.
Monday morning, rough and tumble.
Sunday night I got in trouble.
I'm low. So low.
So far down ain't got nowhere to go.
So far down ain't got nowhere to go.
So far down ain't got nowhere...

Pardon me love, help a lost soul? Ramblin’ through this town, chasin’ bottles. Lets just say that I’ve done things you'd have to die to find out and now I’m hell bent on whiskey mama, but I’m about to dry out.
I’m a gambler, play Texas hold em'. I never dreamed I'd stick a man for twenty dollars. Told em’ you been cheatin’ boy, ill take my money and a drink. He pulled his gun and said, bars closed and i suggest that you don’t blink.
Why now, can’t we reconcile?
My belly's been a achin’
Queen of spades ran with my wages, lord I’ve dried out
Where’s your well?
I'd die to find out.
Murfreesboro, it sure don't love me, saloons and women done stole all my money. Where the hell's a man to get a goddamn drink in Tennessee? Please reserve your convictions love, judgment’s comin’ soon enough for me.

Driftwood Roots
04:09
|
|
||
I was born one morning, I was born
From a dream I floated to the shore
In a cradle woven by the storm
On my eyes lay two golden yellow stones
Oh my lord, oh my lord, oh my lord I left my name on my gravestone
But my lord, oh my lord, oh my lord I guess it wasn't time to go
I remember flyin' through my crown
With my driftwood roots deep underground
When I woke with water all around
Now my eyes don't see what I see with my brow
Oh my lord, oh my lord, oh my lord I can't decide what to believe
But my lord, oh my lord, oh my lord I gotta find a way to leave

Outrun The Storm
02:31
|
|
||
Lightning flashes in my eye
Yellow dashes flying by
We're hauling down the road
Just trying to make our way home
We gotta run run run, we gotta outrun this storm
We gotta get back home where that fire burns so warm
We gotta go go go, go away, time is not on our side
Now the clouds are rushing in
Darker than they've ever been
We've reached the end of our luck
Everybody in the truck
We gotta run run run, we gotta outrun this storm
We gotta get back home where that fire burns so warm
We gotta go go go, go away, time is not on our side

The Hills
03:56
|
|
||
Run! run for the hills
Run from the wind
The storm's comin' in!
Hide! Take what you can
Possessions in hand
The storm's comin' in!
Where, where is my son?
Ten year old son
The storm's comin' in!
Hide, daughter and wife!
I'll be behind
Run for the hills!
I'm just a veteran, alone now for 20 long years
One sole survivor, alone when the avalanche hit
Here on this mountain it came subtle and swift
So run weary stranger, run into the wind.
Run! Run from the hills!
Run to the wind
The storm's comin' in!
Hide! Take what you can
Follow this man
Run for the hills!

I Know
01:59
|
|
||
I never knew something was wrong,
Till I came home and you were gone.
Said out loud "How could this be?"
Why would my love ever leave me?
And I know, I know, I know,
That you'll be back some day.
So I drank away the pain.
Every night ended the same.
With me sitting on the floor,
Hoping that you'll walk through that door.
[Chorus]
Days go by and you don't call.
Seasons change from spring to fall.
I know what I have to do,
So I'm here waiting for you.
[Chorus]

Manzanita
03:23
|
|
||
When I head northward for Nehalem Bay
Would you ride with me? Girl.. what do you say?
Manzanita, she taught me a simpler way
Manzanita, I'm coming to stay.
Sunrise behind us, sunset ahead
Follow the arrow girl, follow me west
I'm strung out on digging for youth in my chest
But I'd grow old with you nevertheless.
When I was younger I had a dream
A dream I abandoned when I turned 18
But Manzanita, you brought that old dream back to me
But this time around I'm listening.

Ponytale
03:36
|
|
||
Once I'd been caught with a leash like a dog
With a ponytail rope and a song.
The weather was soft and my body forgotten,
Eleven at night in the white flower garden
The weight of the world and the heavier words
No longer rested on me,
Right by my girl as she smiles at squirrels
Ringin' round the old oak tree
Twenty years old when we built us a home
Down by the freshwater stream.
Next thing I know, came a child of my own,
Came a girl who asked nothin' of me.
I've got letters to send, letters I haven't read,
Turnin' yellow too fast to believe,
What I'd say has been said, but that's not what I meant
So I've given up tryin' to speak.
I don't know what it is, I'm to do while I live,
While my baby smiles just like she did
When I was caught with a leash like a dog,
With a ponytail rope, and a song.

Collateral To Keep
03:32
|
|
||
I create for the world, fore the world creates me,
bring laughter to friends and I bless those who sneeze.
Well, a smile on a face is collateral to keep
to negotiate with the pain that I'll meet.
You find out.
That you find nothing at all when your heads in the clouds and you think you know it all.
You find out.
Well I’ve done a few things I’d do differently now,
no sense hanging on the past what, why, and how’s.
Each step of the journey, each lesson and change,
have taught me to strive to seek different ways.
You find out.
That you find nothing at all when your foots in your mouth and your mind is like a wall.
You find out.
Now I predicate my behavior on my faith in humanity,
with out it where would we be?
No matter how it seems, little, big, or tall,
that hint of optimism is good for us all.
The next time your sour, mad, angry, upset,
think of all the love that you take for granted.
Think of all the love that we take for granted.
